Garden State Goof
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
For years, New Jersey has been the butt of jokes...mostly
by comedians on the other side of the Hudson in New York
City. However, it's also true that two pro football teams
play in New Jersey while still calling themselves NEW YORK.
We New Jerseyans don't get no respect.
Now the Postal Service is getting into the act, and not for
the first time.
Its new stamp collecting catalogue shows the upcoming
designs for the 50-state Greetings from America stamps,
which come out in early April. The states are arranged
alphabetically on the sheet, and where the New Jersey stamp
should be is...New York. The Empire State is also shown in
its proper place.
In 1994, the World Cup soccer championships were played in
the U-S, including at Giants Stadium in New Jersey....but
the Postal Service put "New York" on a stamp souvenir map
it issued.
Don't worry, a spokeswoman says, this time it's just a
mistake in the catalogue illustration. The real stamps will
be right.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
