November 17-18, 2001:
Getting the picture.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Next June, the U-S Postal Service will issue a sheet of 20
stamps called Masters of American Photography. Rather than
showing the photographers, it'll show the pictures they took.
But, while we've seen the designs for most of the rest of
next year's stamps, we don't yet have a PICTURE of these
picture stamps.
How come? In order to illustrate the work of twenty-one
photographers -- 20 stamps plus the border around the
sheet -- the Postal Service had to get twenty-one sets of
permission. Last summer, one family wanted a different
photo used. Now there's a question of how one of the
photographs should be displayed on its stamp.
The peg for issuing the stamps is the hundredth anniversary
of the birth of Ansel Adams and a photography exhibition at
the Smithsonian.
By the way, you won't see a Matthew Brady stamp in the set.
We're told that while photographers in his STUDIO took many
photos during the Civil War....but it's not certain which
ones Brady himself took.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
