Real Life Intrudes.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
It's hard to think of anything other than the tragic events
of this week. And, like everyhing else, stamp collecting has
been affected by the terrorist attacks.
You probably didn't hear that the Postal Service did decide to
request a rate hike, for three cents a letter. It made the
announcement just as the tragedy started.
For decades, at least since Franklin Roosevelt's death in 1945,
some collectors have obtained postmarks on envelopes to mark
tragic events. Tuesday was no exception....but eBay isn't
allowing anything connected with the attacks to be offered.
They've removed these event covers, as they're called, from sale.
One of the 50 stamps for next year's Greetings From America series
is for New York State, of course...and the design was to include
the New York City skyline -- but it's changed now.
The other night, however, I found an hour or so to work on my
stamps. No radio, no television, no news.
I needed that.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
