August 25-26, 2001:
Hand-carved stamps.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Richard Byrne of West Chicago loves classic U-S stamps.
"I carve them, in wood, oversize, to show all the details."
RUNS :03
The carvings are about 12 by 14 inches, and maybe two inches
high.
"I keep finding new issues to carve, mostly older U-S issues,
and I like to display them, at stamp shows, and at
wood-carving shows."
RUNS :08
But Byrne would really like to see his carvings housed in a
museum.
"I think it helps support philately, stamp collecting, and I
think it helps support wood-carving as well."
RUNS :05
The retired Postal Service manager began his hobby six years
ago, and collects the original stamps that his carvings
portray -- and that limits his collection.
"The older issues, first and foremost, are ornately engraved,
beautiful letter, lovely vignettes...everyone of them is an
historic piece that has a slice of history that once you start
delving into them you become hooked."
RUNS :14
Byrne is demonstrating his art this weekend at Stampshow 2001
outside Chicago.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
