June 23-24, 2001:
Frequent Flier Philately.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Philately -- that is, stamp collecting -- used to stop for
the summer -- All that high humidity and little pieces of
gummed paper. But with air conditioning, that's not the case
any more, and there are several major stamps shows around the
country this summer.
This weekend, the American Topical Association is meeting in
suburban Phoenix. Topicalists collect by subject -- birds,
trains, music, and so on.
Another major specialty group, the American First Day Cover
Society, holds its annual show in about six weeks in Denver.
A new Woody Station Wagon stamp for bulk-rate mail will be
issued.
And, at the end of August, the annual convention of the
American Philatelic Society, the umbrella group for the hobby,
will be held in suburban Chicago. Carnivorous Plant stamps
will be issued.
In between, there are two regional shows in July -- Indypex
and the Minnesota Stamp Expo.
You can find more information about these shows at
stamps-dot-org or virtual-stamp-club-dot-com.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
