June 17-18, 2000:
It ain't necessarily so.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Not everything you hear or think you know about stamp
collecting is true.
Here's one: The fancy word for stamp collecting is
"philately," pronounced just like that. The adjective is
"philatelic."
You don't need to spend a lot of money to collect stamps.
Many collectors save the stamps from their mail, their
friends' mail, their families' mail...and even buy bulk
lots of used stamps.
Most U-S stamps issued since World War Two have not gone
up in value. However, I said "most," so it's a good idea to
check a stamp catalogue first.
Stamp collecting doesn't have to be lonely and solitary.
It CAN be, but it can also be a social event, with a major
stamp show somewhere in the U.S. almost every weekend and
major events around the world. There are also Internet chat
rooms and message boards to keep in touch with stamp
collecting friends.
And finally, not all stamp collectors are dull: They include
space shuttle test pilots, actors, and major college
basketball coaches.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
