June 3-4, 2000:
Two new stamps solve a postal problem.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The Postal Service has a commitment to issue new stamps at
four major shows each year, the four shows it helps sponsor.
But with the cancellation of several issues, including new
Christmas subjects, this year, and plans to issue nearly 20
space stamps in July....the cupboard was bare.
After several months of head-scratching, the solution was
to assign a ten-cent Gen. Joseph Stilwell stamp to the
American Philatelic Society's Stampshow in August...and
another showing one of the Lions in front of the New York
City Public Library building to the New York City show in
November.
Stilwell spent most of World War Two as an aide to Chiang
Kai-Shek in China, was commander of U-S forces in the
China-Burma-India Theater. A stamp honoring Vinegar Joe
has been on the "someday" list for several years. The
Literary Lion stamp, however, is new. It will cover the
presorted standard rate -- third class, or what you and
I call "junk mail."
And that's stamp collecting this week.
