When Rights Are Wrong.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Licensing was very much a part of several announcements from
the Postal Service this past week.

Edward G. Robinson will be on this year's Legends of
Hollywood stamp. The announcement should have come last fall.
Instead, we heard strong rumors it would be Robinson...and
THEN rumors there were problems obtaining the rights from
his estate.

The Legends of Baseball stamps were announced. Twenty
outstanding players will be honored just before the All-Star
Break. I first heard about this issue 6 or 7 years ago, but
IT was shelved because of problems getting permissions from
all the families involved.

And one more: Details about the Summer Sports issue were
released. In past years, this would have been the Olympics
issue, and it would have been more than a single stamp. But
the Postal Service had a major falling out with the U-S
Olympic Committee four years ago, because it wasn't a sponsor
of the games. The stamp can't use the rings or the word
"Olympics."

Getting on a stamp is supposed to be an honor -- not something
for which you get paid.

And that's stamp collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
