Combining coins and stamps.


The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.


The U.S. Mint is selling "covers" commemorating the release 
of its new one-dollar coin and Massachusetts quarter.  A 
cover in philately -- in stamp collecting -- is an envelope 
with a stamp and cancel. Often, the envelope is decorated.


Since you can't put a postmark on a coin -- or not easily, 
anyway -- collectors sometimes combine the two, into 
something called a "Philatelic-Numismatic Cover" -- which 
is quite a mouthful -- or P-N-C for short.


The Mint has affixed the new coins and a flag stamp to 
cards, and had the stamp postmarked on the first day the 
coins were available to the public, January first for the 
Sacagawea dollar or January third for the quarter.


Both P-N-C's are being sold for twenty dollars. You get 
one Sac dollar on the card or two Massachusetts Quarters, 
plus a 33-cent stamp. Nice profit. The Mint made 
200-thousand Sacagawea P-N-C's, and 75-thousand for the 
quarters....so don't expect to make a MINT from these.
